Dear Leader,
I trust this meets you in pursuit of leadership.
The year has so well begun and I wish you a truly new year.
Because in actual sense, you are the one to define what is really new in a “new year”.
Everything else has remained the same since last year. We still have 24 hours every day, the same Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday; just as we had them in 2024.
And just as I advised in my few last letters of 2024, you should focus more on growth. It is growth that makes this year new. Become better than you were in the previous year, and don’t try to arrive.
Growth is a journey and you should treat it as such.
Many people in this part of the world are working so hard to arrive. They work so hard to “arrive” at a position they so desire and once they get there, they stop striving to grow or improve.
There is nothing wrong with the desire to progress in your career this year, but as leaders, we do not have an arrival mentality. Instead we see our lives as a journey that only terminates at departure from the earth realm.
So, set goals for where you want to be but focus more on who you want to be. Become more growth oriented than goal oriented. I made this shift a long time ago.
One of my role models gave me a thinking framework in this quote:
“If what you did last year still looks big to you, you haven’t done much this year”.
So this year;
- Learn your craft. Read something every day about your craft.
- Practise your craft. As you know more, you do more but as you do more, you discover what you ought to do differently, then get out of your comfort zone to try new things. That’s how growth happen
- Talk your craft. Talk with your peers but talk more with people higher than you. When you do the latter, ask questions, shut up and listen.
Invest in growth. No matter the cost of learning and growing, the cost of doing nothing is greater.
Happy New Year!
I’m rooting for you,
Great Owete
