Your Title is not the Finish Line

Dear Leader,

I trust this meets you in pursuit of wisdom.

My apologies, my letter came a day after the usual schedule. It’s been a busy start of May.

As I work with young leaders, there is something I realise. There is a quiet danger that comes with leadership – one that does not announce itself so loud, but slowly erodes effectiveness: the temptation to settle.

It is the subtle thinking of “After all, when influence has been gained, when people already listen to me, when I already have the title attached to my name, what else remains?”

It is easy to assume that growth can slow down. That you have, in some way, arrived.

But there is no “arrival” in leadership. Leadership is evolutionary.

There is always more!

Your growth shapes who you become.
Who you become determines who you attract.
And who you attract ultimately defines the success or limitation of your organisation.

If your growth stops, your leadership stops. And when leadership stops, decline is only a matter of time.

The question then is not whether you have a title. The question is: are you still teachable?

What does it mean to remain teachable?

It begins with a mindset.

Refuse the illusion of arrival. The moment you believe you have nothing more to learn is the moment you begin to lose relevance. Leadership is not sustained by past victories but by present growth.

Shift your gaze from past trophies to future responsibilities. Achievements are good, but they are not the assignment. The assignment is always ahead of you.

Embrace the process, not shortcuts. Anything of lasting value will demand discipline, patience, and intentional learning. There are no sustainable substitutes.

Confront pride with honesty. You may know much, but you do not know everything. The strength of a leader is not in having all the answers, but in remaining open to new ones.

And when mistakes happen (they will always happen), extract the lesson fully. A mistake can be a teacher once, but repeated mistakes reveal neglected learning.

Your title is not the proof of your leadership, but how you consistently grow.

Even after winning an election.
Even after receiving recognition.
Even after stepping into authority.

Learning must continue.

This is why we have extended the application deadline for the Early Leaders Fellowship to 10th May 2026.

If you are currently serving as a student leader in any campus across Delta State — or you know someone who is — this is an opportunity to remain grounded in growth while rising in leadership.
