Dear Leader,
I trust this meets you in pursuit of wisdom.
Every now and then, I make it a personal discipline to learn from those who have gone ahead of me – individuals whose journeys reflect the kind of impact, influence, and legacy I aspire to build. Leadership, I have come to realise, is not stumbled upon; it is consciously cultivated through reflection, observation, and intentional living.
Recently, a mentor shared with me four simple yet profound ways to live like a leader. I have been reflecting deeply on them and since I owe you my notes – leadership lessons, I do not want to hide this from you. So here you go:
- Live ahead of your contemporaries
Leadership demands foresight. While many are preoccupied with the present, the leader is already thinking about what comes next. To live ahead is to anticipate change, prepare for opportunities, and develop capacity before it is required.
This does not mean rushing life or competing unnecessarily; rather, it means being intentional about growth. Read what others are not yet reading. Build skills others are postponing. Ask questions others are not yet asking. When the moment of responsibility comes, you will not need to scramble but you will already be prepared.
- Live above your circumstances
If you live in Nigeria like me, you are aware of the fuel hike spiralling into higher cost of living. Circumstances are real, but they are not final. One of the distinguishing marks of a leader is the ability to rise above limitations whether economic, social, or personal but yet still deliver value. This is why leadership is hard work.
To live above your circumstances is to refuse to let your environment dictate your mindset or your standards. It is choosing discipline over excuses, vision over comfort, and responsibility over complaint. Real leaders are not defined by what they face, but by how they respond. It sound simple, but it cannot happen if your mind is not shaped right.
- Live deeper than your surroundings
My pastor would always say, “Go deep enough”. We are in a world driven by noise, speed, and surface-level engagement, but leadership requires depth. Depth of thought. Depth of character. Depth of conviction. If you lack depth, very soon you will work out of your calling because of the influence of your surroundings.
To live deeper is to commit to understanding, not just reacting. It is taking time to think critically, to reflect, and to build strong internal values. Shallow leaders chase trends; deep leaders shape them. Your ability to lead sustainably will always be rooted in how deeply you think, learn, and grow. Don’t chase trends, understand what you have been called to do and define your standards, behaviour and every other thing by your calling.
- Live beyond your capabilities
At first glance, this sounded unrealistic, but it captures a powerful truth: leadership stretches you beyond what is comfortable or familiar.
To live beyond your current capabilities is to step into spaces that demand more from you than you think you can give. It means embracing growth, taking on challenges, and trusting that capacity is built in the process of doing, not before it.
Leaders do not wait until they feel “ready.” They step forward, learn on the way, and expand as the demands increase.
As you start your week, I hope you would take some time to meditate on these leadership insights and find ways to internalise them into your subconscious, that your profiting will be evident to all.
I’m always rooting for you,
Great
